Vaccines FAQs

When it comes to our furry companions, we all want to see them thrive; chasing balls, napping in sunbeams, and greeting us at the door every day. Vaccines are one of the simplest, most effective ways to keep your pet healthy for the long haul. At Jester Plaza Veterinary Clinic in Houston, TX, we know that vaccine schedules and safety questions can sometimes feel like a tangle of leashes. We’re here to give you clear answers, help you understand what’s truly necessary, and make vaccine visits as smooth as possible for both you and your pet.

Why Are Vaccines Important for Pets?

Vaccines are like little shields, helping your pet’s immune system recognize and fight off dangerous diseases before they take hold. This not only protects your pet, but also helps stop serious illnesses from spreading among pets in your neighborhood and community.

Which Vaccines Does My Pet Really Need?

We break vaccines into two groups: core and non-core.

•             Core vaccines are recommended for all pets—think rabies, canine distemper, parvovirus for dogs, and calicivirus and panleukopenia for cats.

•             Non-core vaccines depend on lifestyle, age, and risk. If your dog goes to dog parks or your cat loves to sneak outside, other vaccines (like Bordetella or feline leukemia) may be a good idea. We’ll talk openly with you about your pet's environment and habits to recommend only what’s truly beneficial.

How Often Are Vaccines Needed?

Puppies and kittens start with a series of shots that boost their immunity as they grow. After the initial set, most adult pets need boosters once a year or sometimes every three years, depending on the vaccine and your pet’s health. We'll create a simple, customized schedule so you never have to remember every date on your own.

Are Vaccines Safe?

Safety is always top of mind. The vaccines we use are rigorously tested, and side effects are rare and usually mild; think slight soreness, a little sleepiness, or a minor bump. If you ever notice something that just doesn’t seem right (difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting, swelling), give us a call right away. We’re always here to help.
